Terms of Reference (ToR) for Senior Librarian

Location: Kanifing Municipal Library

Reports To: Manager

1. Purpose of the position

The Kanifing Municipal Library aims to provide comprehensive library services to the community. The Senior Librarian will play a pivotal role in developing library programmes and services to enhance community engagement and knowledge access. He/ she will lead and manage the library services and programmes to meet the needs of the community.

2. Key Responsibilities

• • Assist in the daily operations and management of the library.
  • Supervise library staff, providing training and support.
  • Develop and implement library policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement library programmes which underline literacy and support learning.
  • Promote library services and programmes through advocacy and outreach.
  • Manage library collections by ensuring its diversity.
  • Assist in collection development and management based on community needs and trends.
  • Ensure high-quality service to library patrons.
  • Assist in preparing and managing the library budget.
  • Monitor expenditures and identify funding opportunities.
• The Senior Librarian will report directly to the Director.
• Any other duties assigned by the Director.

3. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science (BLIS) or equivalent from an accredited institution. A Master’s degree would be an added advantage.
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in library management or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of library systems, services, and technologies.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

4. Performance Evaluation

• Performance will be evaluated annually based on the achievement of the established goals and objectives.
