Organizational context
The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) was established by an Act of Parliament and became an independent National Society on 5 October 1966, after The Gambia gained independence from Britain. Its constitution/statutes are based on the Geneva Conventions and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality). The GRCS is officially recognized by the Government of The Gambia as a humanitarian relief organization, auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian and development fields and the Medical Services of the Armed Forces. In relation to the public authorities, the GRCS maintains its independence and neutrality which allows it to act in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of the Movement.
The GRCS is a legally constituted organization with legal status and an unlimited term of existence. It is operating in all the seven administrative regions/areas in The Gambia and has thousands of active volunteers across the country who are well trained in different areas of intervention of the National Society. The Society has won the trust and confidence of the communities and partners and is currently the largest humanitarian institution with strong network of volunteers throughout the country.
The overall objective of the GRCS is to prevent and alleviate human suffering with complete impartiality, not discriminating against nationality, race, ethnicity, age, gender, religious beliefs, class or political opinions, or any similar criteria and should act in accordance with the spirit and principles of the Geneva Conventions.

The Vision Mission is “Improving the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity” with the Goal of “to be a reputable, strong, and neutral humanitarian organization, with a national network of volunteers and resources and an international link with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, capable of preventing and alleviating the suffering of the most vulnerable.
The Gambian Red Cross (CRG hereafter) and Spanish Red Cross (SpRC hereafter) have been carrying out programmatic actions/interventions in The Gambia since 2008, targeting populations in situations of high vulnerability related to Health, WASH and Migration.

This position is intended for a project funded by PROBITAS and the Spanish Red Cross through the project “Strengthening health laboratory systems and improving community health in The Gambia” which runs from 2025 to 2027.This project will be implemented in the Public Health Facilities and communities of Central River Region and West Coast River Region.

Job purpose

The Project Coordinator will ensure the effective planning, coordination, and execution of the project, facilitating communication and collaboration among all stakeholders. These include the Spanish Red Cross, the Ministry of Health (national authority), Fundación Probitas (main donor), and community leaders linked to the targeted health centres.

The role is based at GRCS Headquarters in Kanifing (Westfield) and involves regular field visits to monitor activities, engage with local actors, and support implementation in the Central River (Brikama-BA) and West Coast Regions (Farato).

Job duties and responsibilities

The Project Coordinator will be responsible but not limited for the following duties:

Lead Project Planning

Set clear monthly/quarterly goals aligned with the project priorities.

Translating the needs of the project into actionable plans.

Development of work plans (timelines and schedules), and procurement plans to implement the project activities.

Lead the team to define tasks, deliverables, milestones and services related to the project.

Ensure full alignment with the GRCS, SpRC and donor procedures.

Coordination of the project

Lead the implementation of the project activities according to the project’s design (quality, time and place), and ensure relevant indicators are met.

Provide direction, guidance, and motivation to project staff.

Ensure clear roles, collaboration, and accountability.

Lead a system to monitor operations and follow up on task progress.

Allocate resources efficiently (human, financial, material)

Reporting, monitoring and evaluation

Works closely with the PMER Manager and Team to develop a Monitoring and Evaluation (M & E) Framework.

Prepare and submit accurate and regular reports (interim, annual and final project) and updates (narrative and financial) to immediate supervisor and SpRC delegation, as well as other relevant project documents to keep track of the progress made in the implementation of the activities.

Ensure optimum efficiency of donor funds, effective budgeting and financial controls, transfers and maintenance of compliance.

Establish accountability and feedback mechanisms from the regions.

Monitor activities to ensure milestones are met.

Maintain quality standards and compliance with procedures.

Support internal and external audits by coordinating with technical staff to gather required evidence, documentation, and narrative explanations, ensuring compliance with donor and GRCS and SpRC requirements.

Communication / Advocacy

Promote communication strategies and awareness creation on relevant project activities according to the project’s design.

Organize and implement awareness raising activities in cooperation with partners at country level when relevant.

Ensure the program’s visibility in all the activities according to the communication plan.

Organizing files and documentation

Maintaining and updating physical and electronic files for the GRCS and SpRC.

Establish and archive all verification source documents requested in the project.

Support Partnership Building

Ensure close partnership and coordination with the Spanish Red Cross delegates during the project’s implementation.

Project Closure and Asset Management

Ensure the formal and complete closure of the project, including submission of final narrative and financial reports, delivery of all project outputs, documentation of lessons learned, and archiving the project records.

Ensure that project closure processes are completed prior to the departure of key project staff, including themselves, to avoid operational and reporting gaps.

Coordinate the final inventory of project assets and supplies in collaboration with logistics and finance teams.

Oversee the proper handover or disposal of project assets in line with donor regulations and GRCS, and SpRC policies.

Ensure all asset transfer forms and related documentation are completed, signed, and archived as part of the project closure package.

Support audit processes by ensuring availability and accuracy of asset and inventory records during and after project implementation.

Position Requirements
Education Required/ Preferred
Bachelors or equivalent in Public Health, Project Management, International Development, Public Admin or related field.

Experience Required/Preferred

3 years progressively work experience at national or local levels in programme planning and reporting.

Experience of setting up, managing and coordinating projects including leading teams.

Experience in planning and facilitating trainings, workshops, meetings especially in the health sector

Experience in community engagement, social mobilization and related activities

Experience of working in the Red Cross Movement

Knowledge and Skills Required/Preferred

High degree of integrity, discretion and personal conduct

Logical Framework Matrix (LFM) understanding

Flexible and adaptable to changing working conditions

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills and analytical skills.

Advanced computer skills (windows, spread sheets, including internet navigation and various office applications

Good negotiating and team skills

Languages Required/Preferred

Fluently spoken and written English

Good command of at least one most spoken local language
