Founded in 2011, CorpsAfrica is an international non-governmental organization. It provides the opportunity for Africans to serve as volunteers in their own countries, along the lines of the Peace Corps model. We train college-educated young Africans and send them to live for up to one year in rural, high-poverty communities to facilitate small-scale, high-impact projects that are identified by local people. CorpsAfrica aims to promote a culture of public service in Africa by giving participants the opportunity to apply their education, skills, and energy toward helping their fellow citizens overcome extreme poverty. CorpsAfrica Volunteers participate in a Pre-Service Training, where they are educated on Human Centered Design training as an approach to development and learn about the variety of work NGOs and other development partners are doing in their country.
CorpsAfrica Volunteers listen to local people, facilitate, and help implement community-chosen projects that address critical needs, and build local capacity. This community-centered and community-led approach ensures effective local ownership, cost efficiency, and a deep understanding of the target communities’ long-term needs.
In The Gambia, CorpsAfrica’s focus is climate change and resilience, emphasizing its Green Initiatives. CorpsAfrica Volunteers are expected to perform a comprehensive impact evaluation analysis to serve as a model for future Volunteers and their projects.
