About the role

TVS Gambia is looking for an experienced Chief Mechanic (Lead Mechanic) to lead our team of mechanics in the three-wheeler garage. This is a hands-on leadership role: you remain a working mechanic, handle the most complex repairs, and at the same time organise, support and develop the mechanics team to keep the workshop running to TVS standards.

You will report to the Workshop Manager and be the technical leader on the workshop floor.

Key responsibilities

Technical work & advanced diagnostics

• Diagnose faults , including complex and difficult cases , and carry out repairs and servicing on TVS three-wheelers (engine, transmission, electrical, brakes, etc.).
• Perform both minor and major services to TVS standards.
• Remain a hands-on working mechanic and lead by example on the workshop floor.

Team leadership & work allocation

• Assign daily work and job cards across the mechanics and manage the job queue for an efficient flow.
• Support and assist mechanics on complex or difficult repairs.
• Ensure job cards are completed correctly for the work carried out.

Quality control

• Inspect and verify the quality of completed repairs.
• Carry out a road test where necessary before the vehicle is handed back.

Training & development

• Train and coach junior mechanics and apprentices.
• Run technical sessions and assess technician skills.

Productivity tracking

• Track each mechanic’s productivity: number of services completed, with major and minor services tracked separately.
• Monitor time per job, attendance and days worked.
• Compile monthly productivity reports and monitor repair turnaround times.

Daily procedures & safety

• Ensure tools and equipment are in good working condition and available.
• Enforce workshop procedures, discipline and safety.

Performance indicators

• Mechanics’ team productivity
• Number of vehicles serviced
• Service / repair turnaround time
• Technician attendance and productivity
• Accuracy of daily parts-used checks

Required qualifications

• Diploma or Certificate in Automobile / Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  (e.g. GTTI, City & Guilds, or an equivalent TVET / Trade Test qualification).
• Trade Test certification is an advantage.

Required experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in motorcycle, three-wheeler or light vehicle repair, including at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
• Hands-on experience with TVS or similar vehicles is strongly preferred.

Skills & competencies

• Strong technical and diagnostic skills on small-engine / three-wheeler vehicles.
• Proven ability to lead, train and motivate a team of mechanics.
• Organised, disciplined and target-driven.
• Computer literacy: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft 365, and basic use of tracking / workshop apps is an advantage.
• Good communication; English is an advantage.
