Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrols the bridge and surroundings according to predefined circuits
  • Provides assistance to users
  • Reports any incident to the Traffic Control Room
  • Responds to incidents and implements temporary signage and traffic management work
  • Remove debris and obstacles on the carriageway
  • Fill in the reports as per company policy

Details of Tasks 

  • Expressway Patrols
  • Obtains a full working knowledge of the bridge’s surroundings;
  • Actively monitors the bridge and responds to incidents that may be observed or reported by the Traffic Control Room.  At all times the Patroller will be augmented by stakeholders (internal or external) who will provide towing and mechanical repairs;
  • Acts as a back-up to the road workers as required;
  • Performs shift work on a rotating basis to cover 24 hours, 7 days per week;
  • Ensures the bridge is safe and efficient and minimises disruption to traffic in the event of incidents affecting the safety by providing a rapid and effective response;
  • Provides a service to motorists including minor mechanical breakdowns and assistance in the event of an accident or incident;
  • Provides traffic management at traffic incidents to ensure the safety of the travelling public and “on-site” personnel as well as minor maintenance activities.  The Patroller will also liaise with on-site emergency services to ensure the incident is rectified efficiently and that any obstructions to traffic are moved as quickly as possible.  
  • Provides the initial response to incidents in accordance with procedures;
  • Coordinates with “on-site” resources used in the clean up operation of an incident;
  • Provides up to date information to the Traffic Control Room Operators concerning the traffic conditions;
  • Provides assistance for the training to newly appointed Patrollers on an “as need” basis;
  • Recommends changes to existing procedures to ensure that future responses and actions are efficient;
  • Produces reports concerning the management of incidents, asset damage etc;
  • Performs minor routine testing of “on-road” assets (e.g., weighbridge, traffic lights, etc);
  • Performs planned monitoring tasks including inspections, checking fences and verification of the removal of graffiti;
  • Performs shift work on a regular basis as well as works alone. This position requires the incumbent to work outdoors in all types of weather and traffic conditions.  This will involve working on the bridge, regularly in emergency conditions;
  • Performs other planned maintenance activities include rubbish removal and gutter sweeping;
  • Accompanies contractor and/or visitors on the road; and
  • other duties as required.

Other Expectations of the job

  • May be required to stay beyond shift hours until a qualified Traffic Control Patrol Crew becomes available.
  • Required to care for and operate all assigned tools and equipment in a safe and proper manner;
  • Required to care for and properly manage all materials, supplies, stocks and inventories under his/her supervision;
  • Required to maintain a clean, neat, and safe environment of the assigned workstation.

Working Environment 

Field work with regular exposure to noise, sunlight, wind, rain, dust and vehicle exhaust fumes.

Skills & Abilities Current driving licence. Truck licence preferred
