About Us:
FLAG is a non-political, non-sectarian, non-governmental and not-for-profit Association, comprised of female members of the Gambian legal profession established since 2006. It has in various ways contributed to the development of and the realization of the Rights of women and children in The Gambia since establishment. Membership of FLAG is limited to female members of the legal profession (living in The Gambia and abroad), nonetheless, FLAG welcomes the support of the male members of the legal profession (who become honorary members), stakeholders including the general public all of whom are essential to the process of upholding Women’s and Children’s Rights.
Objects
The Association aims to procure changes to the laws of The Gambia for the protection and well-being of women and children, with the objectives of: Eliminating gender-based violence and violence committed against children; promoting freedom of expression; and, educating and enabling women and children to participate effectively in the development process of The Gambia and its wider community.
In line with our vision, we uphold three main objectives:
- To lobby for gender equality in the Gambia through legislative reforms, public education, and advocacy;
- To enhance and promote the welfare and legal status of women and children;
- To promote the principles and aims of the United Nations and the African Union, especially those regarding women and children
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Research and Legal Assistant. This individual will be responsible for conducting legal research, analyzing data, preparing legal documents, and providing administrative support to the legal team. The ideal candidate should have strong research and analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Client and Case Management:
- Register clients and arrange interviews.
- Obtain and organize witness statements and documentation.
- Maintain and update legal files and case records.
Legal Research and Documentation:
- Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinion to support cases.
- Draft and proofread legal documents and correspondence.
- Compile data for legal documents and reports.
Court and Administrative Support:
- File legal processes and manage court case calendars.
- Accurately record court proceedings and prepare necessary documents.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist with proposal preparation and other administrative tasks.
- Represent the association in meetings and activities.
- Support the legal team and perform other duties as needed.
Qualification and Experience:
- LLB/bachelor’s degree in law with merit or higher
- Strong knowledge of legal terminology and processes
- Experience in administration, legal work, and legal research
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google suite and legal research databases
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Prior experience in a legal environment or as a research assistant is advantageous
