The 21st century skills are skills every HR is looking for. They are more than computer and technology skills. These are skills, without which, you cannot successfully participate in the Gambian economy—and global economy at large. It is a fact that changes to the economy, jobs, and businesses over the last several decades have reshaped workplaces and the nature of work. So we need improved 21st century skills. But what are these skills? It depends on who you ask; but arguably; the most critical are:
• Collaboration and teamwork
• Creativity and imagination
• Critical thinking
• Problem solving
The Gambian work-forces are nationwide due to the Internet. It is now the norm to communicate with and market nationwide instantaneously and effectively. Almost all organizations/business/companies have branches across the country, and yet they meet and work with each other every day! The ability to collaborate and communicate in these types of situations is essential for both employees and employers. The trend toward collaboration through the Internet is a strong force in today’s Gambia—from crowd sourcing, collaborative editing, social media, and networking– the reach of collaborative possibilities is endless
It’s easy to see why creativity and imagination skills are critical. They empower one to make effective and level-headed decisions in their lives and relationships. These skills make you adept at conceptualization, organization and classification, and knowledge synthesis. When you face interesting challenges you will be able to figure out how to meet them using your own ingenuity and visualization techniques.
To paraphrase– Hanover Research report, A Crosswalk of 21st Century Skills– Creativity and imagination goes hand in hand with critical thinking and problem solving; one might even say to separate these categories is redundant. Problem-solvers can work independently of higher supervision. They are initiative- and risk-takers, and they aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and make mistakes. They also learn from those mistakes, and habitually debrief their processes for the purpose of creating more efficient and economical ones. Such an individual is an asset to any workforce, and these are the kinds of people who will be successful in any workplace.
