SOS Children’s Villages in The Gambia is a non-governmental social development organisation that has been active in the field of children’s rights and committed to children’s needs and concerns since 1982. Focussing its work on children without parental care and children in families in difficult circumstances, the organisation has a wide range of programmes, which include: Children’s Villages, Youth Facilities, Family Strengthening Programmes, Kindergartens, Schools, a Mother and Child Clinic, Vocational Training Centres, Youth Empowerment projects, a Community Strengthening Through Green Economy and Education Project, a Monetising Waste Project and a Gender Equality Project

Position summary:

The Classroom Teacher is responsible for teaching general subjects in the primary/secondary school curriculum. The role involves preparing and delivering engaging lessons, evaluating student progress, and maintaining accurate academic records. The teacher will be responsible for the academic and moral well-being of the children in his/her class during the school day and will support the Principal and Vice-Principal in all matters of discipline.

The Classroom Teacher reports to the Principal

General aim of the position

To teach general subjects in accordance with the school curriculum.

To be responsible for the academic and moral well-being of the children in his/her class during the school day.

To prepare teaching materials, lessons, and maintain school records including class registers, forecasts, notes of lessons, schemes of work, and report cards.

To regularly evaluate and mark all students’ class work, homework, tests, and assignments.

To support and assist the Principal in all matters of discipline.

To supervise children during lunch and general cleaning of the classroom and immediate environment.

To attend PTA and reporting sessions.

To carry out special duties as assigned by the Principal/immediate supervisor.

Qualifications/Competencies required:

A trained and suitably qualified teacher (TC / PTC).

Total commitment, dedication, and allegiance to the SOS school and students.

A positive approach to work and a willingness to carry out extra-curricular duties.

Strong classroom management and communication skills.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team under the direction of the Principal and senior staff.
