Communication & Outreach Officer – Information & Communication Dept. 14 views
Job Overview
COLEAD — the Committee Linking Entrepreneurship, Agriculture and Development — is a private non-profit association, ISO 21001 certified (training system), with hubs in Paris-Rungis, Brussels, Lomé, Nairobi and Santo Domingo. Trusted by partners such as the EU, AFD, IDB or FAO-IPPC, COLEAD contributes to the sustainable transformation of food value chains, particularly in horticulture.
COLEAD is looking for a Communication & Outreach Officer, based in The Gambia, to support the SPRING programme — which strengthens the competitiveness and sustainability of The Gambia’s horticultural sector.
A significant share of SPRING’s results depends on effective communication and outreach in the field: awareness and compliance campaigns, dissemination of technical and good-practice materials, marketing and branding support to MSMEs and producer groups, community-level engagement on nutrition and greening, and investment promotion. The Communication & Outreach Officer will lead these activities on the ground, working closely with Gambian partner-beneficiaries (producer groups, MSMEs, public authorities, support services), SPRING technical teams, and COLEAD’s Information & Communication Department.
Key responsibilities
- Design and deliver awareness, compliance and nutrition education campaigns targeting horticultural value chain actors (e.g. Social and Behavior Change) — adapted to diverse audiences, including rural communities, women and youth.
- Mobilise a mix of communication channels suited to the Gambian context: community-based formats (theatre, radio, TV, community gatherings, peer educators) alongside digital and printed materials.
- Support marketing, branding and product visibility of MSMEs and producer groups; coordinate communication around trade fairs, matchmaking and market linkages.
- Produce and disseminate technical content — crop production protocols, training materials, good practice guides, SOPs — in accessible formats for producers, support services and public authorities.
- Develop communication products to promote community greening, nutrition-sensitive initiatives, infrastructure projects (post-harvest, irrigation, cold storage, laboratories) and investment opportunities.
- Manage SPRING’s social media presence and digital channels as part of an integrated outreach mix.
- Ensure alignment with COLEAD branding and donor visibility requirements; monitor reach and engagement and contribute to programme reporting.
- Design products eg pictorials and conduct community outreach events for local visibility at field and community level in rural settings
Required set of skills and competencies:
- A first experience or genuine interest in communication, outreach or awareness campaigns (internships, student projects and self-initiated work welcome).
- Experience designing or delivering sensitisation campaigns in rural areas — in Public health, nutrition, agriculture/Food security or other sectors — is a strong asset, particularly campaigns using innovative or community-based techniques (theatre, radio drama, TV, mobile cinema, peer educators, community dialogues, Human Centered design).
- Knowledge of The Gambia and good command of local languages and cultural context, is an asset.
- Curiosity about international cooperation and development; interest in EU-funded programmes or the agri-food sector is an asset.
- Awareness of inclusive communication and diverse audiences (rural, low-literacy, women, youth).
- Knowledge of agriculture, horticulture or agri-food trade is an advantage.
- Proven experience in Social and Behavior Change (SBC), community engagement, or behavioral sciences will be an added advantage
Skills
- Strong creativity and collaborative mindset for multidisciplinary, multicultural teams.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication in English and strong knowledge of Gambian languages (knowledge of French is an asset)).
- Ability to translate technical food safety, agricultural, or nutrition concepts into messages and formats adapted to rural and low-literacy audiences.
- Familiarity with social media management and digital content production, alongside more traditional outreach approaches.
- Ability to produce and edit multimedia content, including short videos and audio.
- Proficiency in digital content tools (e.g. Canva, CapCut) and comfortable with AI-supported tools (e.g. Claude, SubMagic, InVideo). COLEAD actively encourages the use of AI — a candidate who knows how to work smart with AI will thrive regardless of years of experience
Contractual Information
This is a full-time role based in Banjul, Gambia, offered under an independent consultancy agreement for an initial period of one (1) year, with the possibility of renewal.
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
We offer a competitive remuneration package aligned with local market standards and reflective of the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
Joining COLEAD means becoming part of a multicultural and committed team working to promote sustainable and inclusive agri-food systems. COLEAD’s values are commitment, diversity, humanity, performance and continuous improvement.
