About SOS Children’s Villages in The Gambia

SOS Children’s Villages in The Gambia supports children and young people who have lost, or are at risk of losing, parental care and works with families and communities to help children grow with care, protection and strong relationships. Our work is guided by four core values: Courage, Commitment, Trust and Accountability.

About the opportunity

We are recruiting a Communications & Marketing Coordinator for a permanent, full-time position based at our National Coordination Office in Bakoteh. You will shape and deliver integrated communications, marketing and advocacy activity that increases public recognition, protects the SOS brand, supports fundraising and advances the rights of children and young people.

Reporting to the Institutional Partnerships & Fund Development (IPFD) Team Leader, you will work with programme leaders, the fundraising team, media, partners and external agencies, and will provide direction to the Digital Marketer.

Role

  • Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate an integrated communications and marketing strategy and annual plan aligned with organisational and fundraising priorities.
  • Plan and deliver campaigns and content across online and offline channels to strengthen fundraising, donor engagement, public awareness and programme visibility.
  • Protect brand integrity by applying SOS global brand guidelines consistently across all communications and touchpoints.
  • Build effective relationships with journalists and media organisations and proactively position SOS’s mission, work and fundraising appeals.
  • Manage the organisation’s website and social-media platforms, ensuring content is accurate, current, engaging and appropriate for each audience.
  • Plan and deliver national events and manage relationships with public-relations, advertising and other external agencies.
  • Define and coordinate national advocacy priorities, projects and partnerships, informed by analysis of child-care legislation, practice and the needs of children and young people.
  • Provide communications expertise to the fundraising team and supervise the Digital Marketer through clear priorities, feedback and support.
  • Ensure that stories, imagery, campaigns and digital content protect dignity, privacy, informed consent and the best interests of children and young people.
  • Monitor results, report impact and use evidence to improve communications, marketing, advocacy and fundraising-support activity.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, development studies or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant professional qualification and experience.
  • At least three years’ relevant professional experience in communications, marketing, public relations, digital media or a closely related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, accurate and engaging English-language content for different audiences and channels.
  • Practical experience managing websites, social-media channels, content calendars and digital campaigns, with an understanding of analytics and performance measures.
  • Experience of media relations, stakeholder engagement, campaign planning, events and managing several priorities to deadline.
  • Sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • A collaborative and inclusive approach, with the confidence to coordinate colleagues, partners, suppliers and external stakeholders.
  • Commitment to child safeguarding, the SOS Code of Conduct and the four SOS values.

Desirable

  • Experience in an NGO, child-rights, development, advocacy or fundraising environment.
  • Knowledge of The Gambia’s media landscape and relevant professional networks.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating the work of another communications or digital professional.
  • Competence with content-management, design, video or email-marketing tools, and relevant local-language capability.

Our Values

  • Courage – We take action. You speak up, challenge constructively and act when children, accuracy or organisational reputation may be at risk.
  • Commitment – We keep our promises. You deliver agreed priorities to time and quality and keep children and young people at the centre.
  • Trust – We believe in each other. You communicate openly and respectfully, protect confidentiality and build inclusive relationships.
  • Accountability – We are reliable partners. You take ownership, use resources responsibly, measure impact and address mistakes promptly.

What we offer

  • A permanent opportunity to use communications, marketing and advocacy expertise in support of children, young people, families and communities.
  • A purpose-led and collaborative working environment with scope to influence national visibility, fundraising and advocacy activity.
  • The opportunity to work with colleagues and partners across programmes, fundraising, media and the wider SOS federation.
