SOS Children’s Villages in The Gambia is looking for a suitably qualified candidate for the position of a Dental Surgeon at the Mothers and Child Clinic (MCC) .

Position summary:

The Dental Surgeon is responsible for diagnosing, treating, and preventing oral and dental diseases and conditions. The role provides comprehensive dental care services, supervises dental staff, ensures adherence to professional and ethical standards, and contributes to oral health promotion and quality improvement initiatives within the clinic.
The Dental Surgeon reports directly to the Medical Director and works within the Dental Unit to deliver high-quality, patient-centered dental care.

General aim of the position

To provide professional dental services, lead the dental team, and promote oral health awareness among patients and the wider community.
• Conduct comprehensive dental examinations and oral health assessments.
• Diagnose and treat dental and oral diseases, including tooth extraction, scaling and polishing, fillings and restorations, minor oral surgery, and management of dental infections.
• Manage dental emergencies and prescribe medications appropriately.
• Develop individualised treatment plans and counsel patients on oral hygiene and preventive care.
• Supervise Dental Nurses and Assistant Dental Nurses, ensuring compliance with infection prevention standards.
• Monitor dental equipment functionality and participate in procurement planning for dental materials and supplies.
• Maintain accurate and confidential clinical records.
• Participate in oral health education campaigns and support school and community outreach dental programmes.
• Adhere to ethical and professional standards, maintaining valid professional registration and licensing.

Qualifications/Competencies required:
• Degree in Dental Surgery (BDS, DDS, DMD, or equivalent).
• Valid professional registration and license to practice in The Gambia.
• Experience in clinical dental practice is an added advantage.
• Strong clinical and diagnostic skills in general dentistry and minor oral surgery.
• Excellent patient communication and counselling abilities.
• Proven leadership and supervision skills.
• Thorough knowledge of infection prevention and control standards.
• Commitment to professional ethics, confidentiality, and continuing professional development.
• Strong teamwork and problem-solving capabilities.
