About Ecomed Scientific Limited

Ecomed Scientific Limited is a healthcare and scientific technology company serving hospitals, clinics, laboratories, universities, research institutions, government agencies, and public-health programmes. We provide reliable equipment, consistent supply, expert training, and responsive customer and engineering support across The Gambia and the wider West African region.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a technically capable and customer-focused Service Engineer to help ensure that medical, laboratory, diagnostic, research, and scientific equipment supplied or supported by Ecomed remains safe, reliable, and fully operational.

The successful candidate will install and commission equipment, perform preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnose faults, support calibration and performance verification, train equipment users, and provide timely technical assistance at customer sites and remotely.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

When essential equipment is unavailable, diagnosis, treatment, research, and public-health services can be delayed. This role protects customers’ investment and helps Ecomed deliver engineering support measured in hours, not days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-installation and site-readiness assessments, identifying electrical, environmental, safety, networking, and space requirements.
  • Install, assemble, configure, test, and commission medical, laboratory, diagnostic, research, and scientific equipment.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, safety inspections, corrective maintenance, and component replacement.
  • Diagnose electrical, electronic, mechanical, software, and connectivity faults using approved technical procedures.
  • Perform or coordinate calibration, quality-control checks, and performance verification, where applicable.
  • Provide responsive on-site and remote technical support, with clear communication throughout every service intervention.
  • Train customers in correct equipment operation, routine care, cleaning, safety, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Prepare complete service reports and maintain accurate installation, repair, maintenance, calibration, and training records.
  • Monitor preventive-maintenance schedules, warranty obligations, and service-contract commitments.
  • Manage assigned tools, test equipment, spare parts, service kits, technical consumables, and company property responsibly.
  • Escalate complex faults to manufacturers or international technical partners and follow each case through to resolution.
  • Support technical evaluations, equipment demonstrations, quotations, tenders, project implementation, and after-sales planning.
  • Identify recurring faults and recommend corrective or preventive action to improve equipment uptime and customer experience.
  • Comply with manufacturer instructions, Ecomed’s quality procedures, occupational safety requirements, infection-prevention practices, and customer-site rules.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, instrumentation, mechatronics, medical equipment technology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Relevant hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of medical, diagnostic, laboratory, or scientific equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to interpret service manuals, technical specifications, wiring diagrams, and fault codes.
  • Practical knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical, software-based, and basic networked systems.
  • Competence in using diagnostic tools, test instruments, computers, and equipment software.
  • Manufacturer training or certification in relevant equipment categories would be an advantage.
  • A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently within The Gambia and, when assigned, across West Africa.

The Person We Are Looking For

  • Strong fault-finding, analytical, and practical problem-solving ability.
  • A customer-first attitude, with empathy for users whose services depend on functioning equipment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical matters simply.
  • Accuracy, discipline, and attention to detail in technical work and documentation.
  • A high level of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Ability to plan field assignments, work independently, collaborate across teams, and remain effective under pressure.
  • Curiosity and commitment to continuous learning, manufacturer training, and professional certification.

How Success Will Be Measured

Performance will be assessed through a balanced set of service indicators, including:

  • Response time and adherence to agreed service-level commitments.
  • Equipment uptime, preventive-maintenance completion, and fault-resolution turnaround time.
  • First-time-fix performance and the quality of technical escalation when additional support is required.
  • Accuracy and timeliness of service documentation, spare-parts accountability, and customer communication.
  • Customer satisfaction, user-training effectiveness, teamwork, safety, and compliance with quality procedures.

Working Relationships

The Service Engineer will work closely with Ecomed’s Technical Services, Sales, Operations, Supply Chain, and Finance teams, as well as equipment manufacturers, international technical partners, customers, contractors, and regulatory or quality-assurance stakeholders.

Our Values

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate Ecomed’s values in every customer and colleague interaction:

  • Serve with purpose and empathy.
  • Deliver on our promises.
  • Act with fairness and integrity.
  • Collaborate to maximize impact.
  • Treat everyone with respect.
